About Onnu biochar
We are on a mission to become one of the UK's most climate impactful businesses by accelerating the adoption and manufacture of biochar
Biochar production and the journey to Net Zero
Biochar is made using a process called pyrolysis, and aside from the environmental benefits biochar delivers, it is a method of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Climate targets cannot be achieved by emissions reduction alone, and ecomonically viable carbon removal capacity is what the planet needs most.
Onnu is dedicated to expanding the use of this technology through building our own plants, and by creating a large scale market for biochar so the commercial conditions exist for all pyrolysis plants to be a success.
How biochar manufacturing removes atmospheric carbon dioxide
The carbon contained in all biomass was at one time absorbed from the atmosphere as plants.
If the biomass is left to decay or burned, the CO2 returns to the atmosphere. By heating it in the absence of oxygen, pyrolysis interrupts this cycle and securely sequesters the carbon in a substance called biochar, which itself has many environmental benefits.
And the process generates heat, making the reaction self-sustaining, and the excess energy is available as a source of green energy.
The process is therefore an engineered carbon removal technology.
Onnu green hubs
Starting in Herefordshire, Onnu's Green Hub series will quickly become among the UK's largest biochar manufacturing and carbon removal facilities.
Built and sited to maximise environmental benefit while being commercially self-sustaining, our Green Hubs take low-value waste biomass and process at scale using leading continuous pyrolysis technology from Woodtek Engineering.
Each site is located close to available feedstocks, maximises use of the excess green energy produced and acts as a biochar fulfillment centre to minimise transportation distances.
The first site has completed it's assessment by Puro and can be seen here.
Since 2021, Onnu has built a team of professionals focused on the scientific, operational and commercial project development to build and run our own pyrolsyis plants, resulting in the roll-out of our Green Hub series.
This expertise means we are able to help other businesses looking to set-up pyrolysis operations and have advised many clients around the world on their pyrolysis journey.
Services we offer include:
> Project validation
> Site evaluation
> Plant design
> Equipment supply
> Carbon credit guidance
> Feedstock trials
> Biochar offtake
