Why your soil needs biochar
How does biochar enhance soil aeration and water retention?
Biochar's unique porous nature enhances soil aeration and water retention, which is crucial for healthy plant root development.
How does Biochar help in Nutrient Retention?
Biochar acts like a sponge, holding nutrients in the soil and preventing them from leaching away, ensuring plants have access to essential nutrients over time.
How does biochar help in soil pH Modification?
Biochar's alkaline nature can help balance soil pH, making it more conducive for a wider variety of plants to thrive.
How does biochar enhance Microbial Activity?
Biochar supports the growth of beneficial soil microbes, essential for decomposing organic matter and cycling nutrients in both gardens and landscapes.
How does biochar contribute to Pollution Remediation?
Biochar has adsorptive qualities that can bind and neutralize soil contaminants, making it useful in landscaping and construction projects in urban areas.
How does biochar Improve Soil Structure?
Biochar reduces soil compaction, encouraging root growth and improving overall soil health.
How does biochar build Drought Resilience?
Biochar’s water-retaining properties help plants survive in areas with inconsistent rainfall or dry seasons.
What is BioChar?
Biochar is a black, solid substance which bears a strong resemblance to charcoal that is produced during pyrolysis (burning at high temperature without oxygen) of biomass.
It is lightweight, fine-grained and very porous, which are all properties that are useful in its primary usage as a soil amendment.
Biochar can be made from all kinds of biomass feedstocks. Each type of biomass has its own physiochemical characteristics which influence the biochar produced, meaning a biochar production facility can tailor their process to create “designer” biochar.
Onnu Biochar
Products
At Onnu Biochar, we offer a variety of biochar products designed for different applications. From small garden projects to large-scale commercial landscaping, our biochar solutions are tailored to meet your needs.
Pure
Biochar
Pure Biochar is ideal for large-scale applications, offering the flexibility to create custom soil blends. This product is a transformative solution for soil health and productivity, significantly enhancing soil structure, boosting water retention, and invigorating the growth of plants, trees, and shrubs.
Pure Biochar can be used for a range of different applications other than soil amendment, including construction material additive, industrial filtration, animal feed, etc.

Compost
Blends
Compost Blends are an excellent choice for enhancing compost quality. By adding biochar to compost, you increase the aeration and moisture retention of the pile, leading to faster composting and a richer end product. These blends are especially useful for topsoil production, garden beds, and landscape projects where nutrient-rich soil is essential for success.
Onnu’s specialized biochar and compost blends are crafted with the needs of residential landscapes in mind. This blend combines the enriching properties of biochar with the organic richness of compost, creating the perfect foundation for thriving vegetables and flowers. Our blend is ideal for businesses managing diverse horticultural projects, promising healthier plant growth and increased yields, while supporting environmental sustainability.

biochar
enriched with microorganisms
Biochar, when mixed with enriched with microorganisms (EM), creates an even more powerful soil amendment. Ideal for gardening, horticulture, and landscaping, this product supports soil biology by promoting microbial activity that helps break down organic matter and recycle nutrients. This option is especially effective in eco-conscious projects where soil regeneration is a priority.
Onnu’s Biochar compost blend with EM boosts water retention, improves nutrient retention and reduces soil acidity. Its high cation exchange capacity (CEC) ensures that nutrients in the compost are slowly released into the soil, making them less susceptible to leaching. The addition of microorganisms supports beneficial microbial activity and contributes to long-term soil improvement. This results in better soil structure and healthier plants over time.

Retail vs bulk
What's the difference?
At Onnu, we offer biochar products in both retail and bulk formats to meet the needs of both small scale and large scale applications:
- Retail: Typically sold in 50L bags, biochar in retail is perfect for home gardeners and small landscape projects. These bags are easy to handle and designed for convenience.
- Bulk: For large-scale applications such as commercial landscaping, horticulture, or construction projects, we can deliver biochar products in bulk. This option is cost-effective and ideal for larger projects where significant amounts of biochar are needed.
Both formats provide the same high-quality biochar that promotes soil health, supports plant growth, and contributes to sustainability.
biochar application
How should I apply biochar products?
Current legislations state that with a permit, biochar (especially biochar made from waste biomass) is restricted to be used at a rate of 1 tonne per hectare per annum.
The application of biochar varies vastly based on your soil type and goals. For pure biochar, here are some common factors to keep in mind to get the most out of its benefits:
- Mixing Ratio: Use 10-20% biochar by volume when mixing into soil or compost.
- Depth: Biochar is most effective when incorporated around plant roots and therefore best used at time of planting. If using on established plants, top dressing can be applied in small regular volumes to slowly be drawn down into the soil.
- Root Application: 10-20% by volume around roots.
- Watering: Water the area after applying biochar to help integrate it into the soil. (Avoid overwatering)
How is biochar different from Charcoal?
Though biochar and charcoal may appear similar, they serve entirely different purposes. Charcoal is typically produced for fuel and cooking, while biochar is specifically engineered to improve soil health.
Biochar enhances the soil’s nutrient retention, aeration, and microbial activity, promoting long-term soil fertility. Charcoal, on the other hand, is used for energy production and lacks these critical agricultural benefits. Additionally, biochar’s production process is designed to be eco-friendly, often using organic waste materials that would otherwise contribute to environmental degradation.
Other biochar applications
Construction Materials: When added to concrete and asphalt, biochar improves durability and thermal properties while reducing carbon emissions
Pollution Remediation: Biochar’s ability to adsorb heavy metals and toxins makes it useful in urban landscaping or construction projects where soil contamination is a concern.
Animal feed: When ingested by livestock, biochar improves nutritional intake delivering health and growth benefits
Industrial uses: Biochar can be used in water filtration to remove heavy metals and pollutants, or as a reductant in metals manufacturing
